Dear friends who care about the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge,

To learn more about the current political situation and how you can help protect the Arctic Refuge, visit the web site of the Alaska Wilderness League. The following list shows the senators who have voted for and against proposed Arctic Refuge drilling. Those senators who have stood strongly in favor of protection always appreciate being thanked. Those who have voted for drilling need to be educated and advised that they are misguided. Phone calls and letters from constituents make a difference. Your voice really matters. Here’s what you can do:

Call Senators: Call Senators from your home state or states in which you have friends and family. If those Senators voted to protect the Refuge(see list below) thank them for their vote. If they voted against the Refuge remind them this is one of the last truly wild places in America. Its wilderness and subsistence values far outweigh any short-term gain from oil production. If your Senator is newly elected, urge him or her to support wilderness designation for the Arctic Refuge coastal plain. Senators can be reached by calling 1-800-247-2971. You may write to Senators at:

The Honorable (full name)
U.S. Senate
Washington, DC 20510

If you need contact information for individual Senators visit the Senate web site.

Contact Members of the House of Representatives: Urge your representative to support HR 39, the Udall-Eisenhower Arctic Wilderness Bill. This legislation, introduced in January 2007, will permanently protect the coastal plain of the Arctic Refuge as wilderness. New memebers of the House particularly need to be educated about the importance of protecting the Arctic Refuge coastal plain and other sensitive areas in the Arctic. Due to the volume of members of the House of Representatives we recommend that you visit the House web site to access individual members information. Congressmen can be called at 1-800-247-2971, or written to at:

The Honorable (full name)
House of Representatives
Washington, DC 20515

Spread the word: Ask everyone you know to contact their Congressional delegation too. It’s important they hear from many people, especially those in their own state. Keep up the fight!
