AWARDS AND REVIEWS:

2007 National Outdoor Book Award, “Design and Artistic Merit” category

" This magnificent book, with 200 sumptuous color photographs, is the story of the birds that return each summer to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. About 190 species gather from six continents and all 50 states to nest and rear their young. Included here are essays by biologists and conservationists recounting the life histories of loons and waterfowl; hawks, eagles, and falcons; shorebirds; gulls, terns, and jaegers; owls; land birds; and a few species that remain within the refuge in significant numbers year-round...This book makes clear the importance of the refuge to bird populations and the dire consequences of permitting oil exploration."

CREATING THE BOOK:

This beautiful book is a wonderful collaboration that represents the work of five outstanding photographers, a dozen writers, and a talented team of editors and designers. Each chapter includes rich life history stories about many of the 190 species of birds that migrate to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

In 2005, I hiked 75 miles through the Arctic Refuge with my good friend, Annie Caulfield. The purpose of this trip was to observe, hear and study many of the breeding songbirds that conduct incredible migrations to the Arctic. Each day of this two-week trek brought new discoveries and sightings of birds such as the Northern Wheatear, Eastern Yellow Wagtail, and Horned Lark. Camping by a nest of American Dippers in the midnight sun, near the rush of water, was an unforgettable experience. We actually witnessed the young fledglings take their first few steps on slick rocks in the spray of cascades.

Our songbird trek was the foundation for Songs from Around the World, my essay in Arctic Wings. This book clearly shows that the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is a special birthplace for an incredible diversity of migratory birds. It is a place worth protecting for the many generations of birds yet to come.
