ART FOR THE ARCTIC
A mother in Washington, and a teacher in Maine, have joined together in a great effort to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge through the voices and artwork of children. I support them in this effort, and encourage children, teachers, and their families to participate.
Karen Quarre explains the project and how you can send art, poems, and your opinions to your U.S. Senators in Washington D.C.:
"Please join the effort to stop proposed oil drilling in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. I would like the children, our future, to voice their opinion on what happens to this very fragile and beautiful ecosystem in Alaska's Arctic. To that end I'm asking children and young adults of all ages to create works of art depicting the wildlife and wilderness of the Arctic Refuge.
The Arctic Refuge is home to one of the largest caribou herds in North America, polar and grizzly bears, wolves and wolverines, musk oxen, and arctic foxes. More than 100 species of birds migrate to the Arctic Refuge coastal plain each year from four different continents. The coastal plain, where oil drilling is proposed, is the birthplace for many animals.
A picture is worth a THOUSAND words! Please send your art to your two U.S. Senators and to your House representatives. Let them know your ideas and hope for this area. You can also send artwork to the:
Committee

Dirksen Building
Washington,

The home of these amazing animals as well as the preservation of the spectacular wilderness depends on OUR voices. Can we find ways to conserve energy as an alternative to destroying a fragile ecosystem? I think so.
Thank you for your involvement. There will be more votes on the Arctic Refuge drilling issue in the future. Please get the word out to all your friends and family to send their pictures, drawings, paintings, poems, stories and other art work to their U.S. Senators.
Send your artwork as soon as possible. Together we can make a difference!"
Sincerely,
Karen Quarre
